Dear Trey Songz,
(This is purely opinion)
This is for all the young girls who can’t understand the damage you are causing them. Please remember that everyone who watches your videos are not grown women. Even though your music is catering to mature people, you still make appearances on shows like BET 106 & Park and I’m sure you meet many young fans out on the road that love your music and respect you.
Now I’m not knocking you doing you. If you like singing about sex, that is good for you. You are a grown man who is capable of making his own decisions. But I am not hating. What I rather you take from this letter is the main idea that you have a lot of power right now. You have the the good looks, body, and voice that would make any girl turn heads upon first glance.
And let’s be real, it’s not your fault you look that way or sound that way when you belt a note. But you have a talent, a gift that many people wish they could have. So don’t you somewhat agree that you should use it for the better of society? Now you might say, “Those are not my daughters. People need to raise their kids.” Yes that is true. Parents need to do their jobs. But let’s be real about this. You may not ever have an idea of how many young girls look at you as their “ideal guy.” I’m sure there is plenty more than you could imagine. You were 15 once. Were you listening to your mother or father or did you think what was on TV and at school was more “cool”? Some of these girls are smart. They will be fine. But some of them are not.
So if Trey Songz puts out a video called “Invented Sex,” and they watch it, what do you think these girls are imagining about sex? Some may think that there is some rewards in it and that their experiences will be good. They will never think about the emotional, mental, and physical consequences that comes with having sex. Why Trey? Because they are young. Now I’m not blaming you for these girls wanting to have sex. People have been doing this before your video came out and they will be doing it after. But does that make it ok? Does it make it fine to continue to glorify something that is a problem in our community? Do you realize you are contributing to the desensitization of the youth’s mind to sex, so that they do not think sex is a serious matter.
And you know what Trey, I’m sure somewhere in the back of your mind you thought about this. You are human and I’m sure you have a heart.
Why am I targeting you? Because you are a celebrity. You have pull, power, and influence that the average person does not have. So what you do will be left in the minds longer than what the everyday person does. That’s the world we live in and that’s the role you decided to take in society.
If this offends you are fans, well you can’t always get the positive reviews you want as an artist. That is life. Someone will always say the truth and be honest.
I say if you love your fans, you will truly think about how your music is affecting them. You might do some community service here and there and give to a charity, but you will be remembered more for the music you make. That’s the world we live in. I say if your music does more influencing then use that to gain people’s ears. Don’t take the easy way out. We both know sex sells. And I see you love selling it. Cus after all you Invented Sex, right?
Sincerely,
The Checkpoint.
